The Kaibab National Forest, which borders the national park on the north and south, is open without fire restrictions as of July 16, 2021. Visitors should always be careful with fire- smoke only inside a vehicle or in a cleared area, and always completely extinguish all smoking materials and campfires before leaving the site.

As of 8:00 AM June 23, the Kaibab National Forest, which bounds Grand Canyon National Park on the north and south sides, is closed to all public entry due to extreme fire danger. Grand Canyon National Park is still open, but all campfires, smoking, charcoal, and open flames are prohibited, except for camp stoves in designated campgrounds.

Effective immediately, Grand Canyon National Park has temporarily closed the North Rim until further notice due to the Mangum Fire near the park. The Mangum Fire is located on the Kaibab National Forest and is not within Grand Canyon National Park at this time. The Mangum Fire began on June 8, 2020 and is estimated at 10,813 acres with 2% containment. SR 89A is closed between Bitter Springs and Fredonia, AZ. SR 67 between Jacob Lake and the North Rim of the park is also closed at this time. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Grand Canyon National Park implemented Stage 2 fire restrictions for the South Rim May 25, which will be effective until further notice.

Due to increased fire danger, all wood burning and charcoal fires, including campfires, warming fires, and charcoal barbeques, will be prohibited on the South Rim of the park. This includes all campgrounds and residential areas. Pressurized liquid or gas stoves, lanterns, and heaters are allowed.

Grand Canyon National Park has temporarily closed Cape Royal Road. Included in this closure are Cape Final Trail, Cliff Spring Trail, the northern section of the Ken Patrick Trail from Point Imperial to Cape Royal Road, and the southern section of the Ken Patrick Trail from Cape Royal Road to the old Bright Angel Trail.

These closures are for public and firefighter safety as crews continue to prep the Walhalla Plateau. The temporary closure is in effect until further notice. The road to Point Imperial and all other North Rim trails and facilities are open at this time.

Grand Canyon National Park will implement closures of the Cape Royal Road, Cape Final Trail, and Cliff Spring Trail tomorrow August 4th, 2018 at 9:00 pm. This closure is for public and firefighter safety as crews continue to prep the Walhalla Plateau. Park visitors currently planning on driving along Cape Royal Road or hiking at Cape Final or Cliff Spring are required to be out of the area by 9:00 pm. tomorrow. The temporary closure is in effect until further notice. The road to Point Imperial and all other North Rim trails and facilities are open at this time.

The U.S. Forest Service and National Park Service will implement additional fire restrictions, also known as Stage II fire restrictions, across the North Kaibab Ranger District, and the South Rim, North Rim and Inner Canyon of Grand Canyon National Park beginning at 8 a.m. this Friday. Visitors should be mindful that these new fire restrictions will limit certain activities and will remain in effect until rescinded, which typically occurs after significant and widespread moisture arrives and fire danger levels subside.

With fire restrictions in effect across much of northern Arizona, including Grand Canyon National Park's neighbors Coconino County, Arizona state lands in the county, and the Kaibab National Forest, NPS fire managers remind visitors and residents that fire danger in the park is very high.

As wild fire danger increases in the park, please observe the following year-round fire restrictions:

• Within the park, fires are only allowed in designated campgrounds and may only be ignited in grills or designated fire rings
• If you are hiking and camping below the rim, cook stoves may be used, but campfires and other open fires are never allowed
• If you are on a river trip, campfires are only allowed in elevated metal pans, and use of a fire proof blanket under the pan is required

National Park Service (NPS) fire managers successfully treated 994 acres with prescribed (Rx) fire on the South Rim of Grand Canyon. The Shoshone Rx burn unit, between Yaki and Duck on a Rock points, consisted primarily of ponderosa pine, pinyon pine, and juniper.
